Richard Newsom FRCOphth MD
About Me
Richard Newsom is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Southampton Eye Unit, a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists (FRCOphth) and a Doctor of medicine (MD).
He specialises in cataract and retinal surgery.
Mr. Newsom trained at St Thomas Hospital London, Southampton Eye Unit, Moorfields Eye Hospital London and the New England Eye Centre, Boston.
His research thesis was on the causes of Diabetic Retinopathy, and he has continued active research into new treatments for retinal diseases, and has written over 60 scientific articles.
He has been an invited speaker at international and national meetings, as well as to GPs, social services and patients groups.
In 2005 he was awarded Honorary Senior Lecturer Post from the University of Southampton, in recognition of his research work
In 2006 he wrote the Ophthalmology section for the Oxford handbook for GPs and was appointed as an examiner by the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
He lives in the New Forest with his family. He enjoys running and cycling in the New Forest as well as sailing.
